VSA (v6.2.0.0) - 7 September 2011

Agent Time Scheduling

This release introduces the agent time scheduling option for audits and agent procedures. This option displays in the Scheduler dialog. With agent time scheduling, the system clock used by the agent machine determines when that scheduled task occurs. Scheduling the same task for 10 machines all on Tuesday, at 2:00 PM, will occur whenever 2:00 PM on Tuesday, local time, occurs for each machine, as determined by each machine's system clock.

  • Applies to audit scheduling and agent procedure scheduling only.
  • A global default to use either server time or agent time scheduling is provided using the new System > Server Management > Default Settings page.

Note: When multiple agents are listed on the same page, with each agent potentially using a different agent time, scheduled times display using server time.

SaaS Accounts: All scheduling has been updated to agent time on your behalf. There is no action to take.

Time Tracking

  • A timesheet approval can be unapproved, if an invoice has not been generated in Service Billing. If there is no Service Billing item in the timesheet, unapproving timesheets is allowed. You must click a link in the Approved cell of the Timesheet Summary page to access the "Unapprove Timesheet" button.
  • A time period with no timesheet entries can now be deleted.
  • Time tracking entries created using session timers now allow users to override the standard rate specified for a selected resource type, matching standard functionality in Service Desk and Service Billing.
  • The paging of timesheets in Approve Timesheets has been fixed.

Quick View - Access Rights

The System > User Roles > Access Rights tab now controls the display of each action button at the top of the Quick View popup window. (Previously introduced with 6.1, the Quick View popup window displays whenever the cursor hovers over a check-in icon. Clicking an action button in the Quick View popup window starts a Live Connect session for that agent machine.)

Quick View - Added Action Buttons

The following action buttons were added to the Quick View popup window.

  • Remote Control
  • Command Shell
  • Registry Editor
  • Chat
  • Video Chat
  • Reset Password
  • Wake Machine - Attempts to wake up an offline machine using another agent machine on the same network.

Quick Monitor

Quick monitor wizards now let you create event sets based on event logs and create monitor sets based on processes and services.

  • Events Sets - A Quick Monitor icon displays next to event log entries. Hovering the cursor over the monitor icon of a log entry displays a wizard. The wizard enables you to create new event set criteria based on that log entry. The new event set criteria can be added to any new or existing event set. The new or changed event set is immediately applied to the machine that served as the source of the log entry. Changing an existing event set affects all machines assigned that event set. Event log entries display in several places:
    • Agent > Agent Logs page
    • Live Connect > Event Sets
    • Live Connect > Agent Data > Event Log
  • Services and Processes - Quick Monitor icons also display next to each process and service listed in the Task Manager of Live Connect. The same Quick Monitor functionality described for event sets above can be used to create new monitor sets for processes or services.

Monitor - Alarm Summary Page

Check-in icons now display on the Alarm Summary page.

Monitor - Event Log Alerts

To provide easier access, the Monitor > Alerts > Event Logs page has been moved to the navigation pane and renamed the Monitor > Events Log Alerts page. The page has also been re-organized.

  • Action buttons display along the top of the page
  • Options on the page are organized into two tabs: Assign Event Set and Set Alert Actions

Live Connect for Mac

Live Connect now supports File Manager and Command Shell for supported Mac operating systems.

Live Connect - VPN

Windows only. Clicking a new VPN menu option in Live Connect creates a VPN connection between your local machine and the Live Connect machine. Once connected, the administrator can connect to other machines sharing the same LAN as the Live Connect machine, even if those machines do not have an agent installed on them. This includes using applications such as SSH, telnet or creating another browser instance that targets these other machines on the same LAN as the Live Connect machine. The VPN session ends when the Live Connect window closes or the Stop VPN button is selected on the VPN menu.

Live Connect - Plug-in Manager

Plug-in Manager is a new feature in Live Connect that streamlines updates to the Live Connect browser plug-in.

  • Plug-in Manager Installation - The user is prompted to install Plug-in Manager after the first logon. Installation of the Plug-in Manager can be deferred until Live Connect is started for the first time.
  • Plug-in Updates - IE and Firefox browsers will detect plug-ins that are out of date and automatically download them in the background. Browser restart is not required for these two browsers. Chrome and Safari browsers also detect out of date plug-ins and automatically download them in the background, with little to no user interaction required.

Support for IE9

Internet Explorer 9 is now supported.

Remote Control - SSH

A new Remote Control > SSH page runs an SSH session to connect to Linux and Mac machines. A command line window displays.

Remote Control - RDP

All references to "Terminal Services" in the Remote Control module have been changed to "RDP" to clarify the protocol being used.

Machine Group drop‑down list in Agent Filter

The Machine Group drop-down list in the machine ID / group ID filter at the top of every agent page has been changed to only show the machine group for an org, if that org has only one machine group.

Orgs with multiple machine groups still display both the parent org and all machine groups. This allows the org to be optionally selected to include all the machine groups.

Exporting Agent Procedure Folders

The System > Import Center now supports the exporting of folders of agent procedures, rather than just a single procedure. The importing of agent procedure folders was already implemented prior to this release. Check the Show Only Folders checkbox at the top of the New Export dialog to select a folder of agent procedures to export.

Run Now Option for Scheduled Reports

An additional "Run Now" button has been added to the toolbars of scheduled reports, on the Reports, Report Sets and Schedule pages of Info Center. This button runs a previously scheduled report or report set immediately. This allows a report that has timed out, erred out, or was unapproved to be re-run immediately without having to reselect all the schedule options over again.

2008 RDL Report Layouts

Reports have been re-designed using 2008 report definition layouts (RDLs). The option must be enabled using the System > Configure > Change URL > "Use 2008 RDLs" option which is disabled by default. If checked, reports are generated using 2008 RDLs. If not checked, 2005 RDLs are used. SQL Server Report Services (SSRS) must be running 2008 to enable this option. 2008 RDL reports feature the following changes compared to 2005 RDLs.

  • Colors and borders have been minimized to draw attention to the data being presented in the report.
  • The service provider's address displays in the upper right hand corner, based on the address specified for the myOrg organization.
  • Report filters display in a Data Filter Table at the top of the report for improved clarity.
  • Charts have been updated to a 3D look.
  • The header displays only on the first page.
  • A footer with the publishing date/time, report title, and page number displays on every page.

Note: 2008 RDLs do not apply to cURL-based reports and reports for most add-on modules. These reports will be addressed in later releases.

SaaS Accounts: The new 2008 RDL's have been enabled on your behalf. There is no action to take.

Machine Groups and Departments - Move and Agents

A new Move button has been added to the Machine Groups tab and Departments tab of organizations. You can:

  • Move all machines and sub-machine groups from a source machine group to a target machine group. The move can be to a target machine group in the same organization or a different organization. The source machine group is deleted after the move. This feature cannot be used on the last machine group in a source organization.
  • Move all staff and sub-departments from a source department to a target department. The move can be to a target department in the same organization or a different organization. The source department is deleted after the move. This feature cannot be used on the last department in a source organization.
  • Note: If you want to re-create the same department or machine group with the same contents at the target location, create the new department or machine group at the new location before the move, and then select it when you perform the move.

A new Agents button on the Machine Groups tab lists the member machines of a selected machine group.

System - Server Management - Default Settings

A new System > Server Management > Default Settings page has been added. Additional server management default settings will be added to this page in subsequent releases. In this release, two new options are provided:

  • Default value for Time on Schedule - Sets the default time to use for agent schedules, using either agent time or server time.
  • Require email address for user name - If yes, a user name record must have an email address. If no, an email address is optional.

SaaS Accounts: The default time has been set to agent time on your behalf. Starting with this release for SaaS accounts, all usernames require an email address be used.

Hidden Link Removed

The hidden link on the Configure page to the right of Defrag Database has been removed. The hidden link dropped all database indexes and then rebuilt from reapply schema.

Web Service API Authentication Upgraded to SHA-256

With release 6.2, K2 has adopted the SHA-256 hashing algorithm for secure authentications. Previously the standard was SHA-1. Due to the SHA-256 change, external applications that integrate to Kaseya via the Web Service API require a programming change to be fully compatible with v6.2. External applications that were in use with v6.1 or a prior version of the VSA should be updated as soon as possible after upgrading to v6.2. Changing a password used by a legacy external application will disable the integration until the external application is updated to be compatible with v6.2. For details, see http://help.kaseya.com/WebHelp/EN/VSA/6020000/9777.htm.

On Premises Only

Reapply Schema Status Messages

When re-apply schema runs, status messages for a particular install script are now supported. They are provided, when warranted, by the script developer.

Reapply Schema

Reapply Schema no longer runs automatically every other day. Reapply schema only runs after an update or when you run it manually from the Configure function.

SaaS Only

External Monitoring

The Monitoring > System Check page is now available in SaaS. System Check monitors machines that don't have an agent installed on them. Machines without an agent are called external systems. A machine with an agent is assigned the task of performing the system check on the external system. A system check typically determines whether an external system is available or not. Types of system checks include: web server, DNS server, port connection, ping, and custom.

Log Monitoring

The following Monitoring > Log Monitoring pages are now available in SaaS.

  • Log Parser - Identify a log file to parse using a log file parser definition. A log file parser definition contains the log file parameters used to store values extracted from the log file. Then assign the log parser to one or more machines.
  • Assign Parser Sets - Define a parser set to generate Log Monitoring records, based on the specific values stored in the parameters.Activate parsing by assigning a parser set to one or more machine IDs previously assigned that log parser. Optionally define alerts.
  • Parser Summary - Quickly copy active parser set assignments from a single source machine to other machine IDs. Optionally define alerts.

Event Log Alerts

The Monitoring > Event Log Alerts page is now available in SaaS. Event Log Alerts triggers an alert when an event log entry for a selected machine matches a specific criteria. After selecting the event log type, you can filter the alert conditions specified by event set and by event category.

Portal Access For End Users

The Agent > Portal Access page is now available in SaaS. Portal Access allows for non-Kaseya administrators to securely access 1 or more computers remotely based on the security set by the administrator. Simply defines the logon name and password, by machine ID, and point the user to the Kaseya URL.

Naming Policy

The System > Naming Policy page is now available in SaaS. The Naming Policy page defines the IP address criteria used to automatically re-assign machines to a different machine group. Each machine group can be assigned multiple naming policies. Naming policies can also force the renaming of a machine ID, if the machine ID name doesn't match the computer name, reducing confusion when administering managed machines.

Live Connect Chat

Kaseya Chat has been added to the Live Connect window in SaaS. Kaseya Chat makes it easier to have a text-based chat with the remote user when video chat is not optimal.

File Management and Storage on Server

The Manage Files Stored On Server option is now available in SaaS. Click the Agent Procedures > Schedule/Create > Manage Files button to display the Manage Files Stored on Server popup window. Use this popup window to upload a file and store it on the Kaseya Server. You can also list, display and delete files already stored on the Kaseya Server. Agent procedures can distribute these files to managed machines using the Write File or Write File in Directory Path commands.

Per Machine Document Storage

The Audit > Documents page is now available in SaaS. The Documents page stores files associated with an individual machine ID. For example, you can upload scanned copies of purchase receipts, contract information, and configuration notes specific to a machine ID.

Customize-able Email and Alert Formatting

Alert email formats can now by formatted in SaaS. Email alerts from tickets or monitor sets coming out of Kaseya can now be edited. Editing capabilities allow for total control of what messages say, where they go, and allow you to integrate with third party parsing tools. This option only displays for System role users. See the System Roles/Scopes for SaaS release note.

Email Reader Filtering

Inbound email for Ticketing email readers can now be filtered in SaaS. Use the "Reject inbound emails containing the following in the subject line" option in Ticketing > Email Reader. This option only displays for System role users. See the System Roles/Scopes for SaaS release note.

System Roles/Scopes for SaaS

In a SaaS partition, a System role/scope user has extra access rights, similar to the extra access rights a master role/scope user has in an "on premises" VSA. Previous to this release, the SaaS administrator could create, by user request, a System role/scope user. With this release a System role and System scope will be provisioned for each new and existing SaaS partition as a standard feature. For existing SaaS partitions, either the original role/scope of a SaaS partition will be upgraded to System role/scope access, or if this original role/scope has been deleted, a new System role/scope will be created.

Kaseya API for SaaS Users

The Kaseya API is now available to SaaS users of the VSA. This functionality is enabled by request, by contacting the SaaS administrator. The Kaseya API enables the integration of other software packages with the VSA.
